Local elementary students showed their love for animals this week by presenting a cheque for $602.40 to the Delta Community Animal Shelter.
From September to December 2023, students in the school’s Create-It Club met twice a week and worked hard creating a variety of craft items to sell at two fundraising events held on October 27 and December 15,2023.
“For students at our school, taking care of the community includes people and animals,” said Danica Palmer, principal. “The Delta Community Animal Shelter was the first place they thought of when deciding where to donate the money they raised. I am so proud of them for thinking of others.”
“The Create-It Club is a club where we make crafts, make new friends and help the animals get a good home. We wanted to help the animal shelter because they are so kind and they make sure animals get a safe home for the rest of their lives,” said Josie and Payton, students. “At our Halloween sale, we made and sold goodie bags, ghosts, lollipops and spiders. And at our Christmas sale, we sold cupcakes, candy canes and decorations. We were able to raise lots of money and are so glad to donate it to the animal shelter.”
Delta Community Animal Shelter Leader Ryan Voutilainen visited the school on Monday, February 5 to meet the students and thank them for their efforts. He brought along a very friendly canine friend, Bacon, who is currently available for adoption at the shelter. The students were thrilled to meet them both.
“We’re extremely fortunate to have a facility such as the Delta Community Animal Shelter here in our community,” said Ryan. “Fundraising efforts such as the ones by Port Guichon Elementary’s students are so important in us being able to provide important medical support to animals in the shelter. It is encouraging to know that the students I met today, who are great ambassadors for animals, will be the leaders of tomorrow.”
“We are so proud of the students – they did a tremendous job of creating and selling a variety of items at the craft fairs,” said Irma Beeksma and Janice Rosychuk, Education Assistants and leaders of the Create-It Club, Port Guichon Elementary. “Their philanthropy is so inspiring. We look forward to seeing where their efforts take them next!”
