Grade 12 secondary student Martin Tang is one of only 30 students across the country to be named a Loran Scholar for 2021. He will receive a post-secondary award worth up to $100,000 over four years. The Loran Scholars Foundation recognizes promising young Canadians based on integrity, courage, compassion, grit and a high level of personal autonomy.
Martin helped establish and lead a Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, providing more than 150 youth with opportunities in a safe and productive space. He founded a VEX robotics team at Seaquam, leading it to international competitions and placing 8th out of 15,000 teams in the 2020 World Skills Rating, while also teaching robotics at Science World. Martin performs with the school jazz band and orchestra, and is a member of Carla Qualtrough’s Constituency Youth Council. Martin also has a strong interest and passion in aviation. After receiving a Glider Pilots scholarship course, he gained skills and experience in flying, meteorology and radio operations, and is now a Transport Canada licenced glider pilot.
“My current goal is to achieve my bachelor’s in Applied Science. I hope to work as an engineer in the tech industry, while also striving to make STEM education more accessible to youth regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds,” said Martin. “Ultimately, with enough experience and learning, I hope to develop new software and technology, and eventually achieve my lifelong dream of launching my own innovative tech start up.”
