A Message from Superintendent, Doug Sheppard
As we look towards the warm, restorative days ahead I would like to acknowledge what a significant and successful year Delta School District has had this past year.
Our District’s core values of responsibility, respect, caring, community and excellence were reflected in how we all — parents, students, staff and teachers — approached our challenges and success.
Among our many achievements, Delta School District launched Farm Roots, an innovative and unique Mini School, as well as a new Opera and Performance Academy. With these initiatives we strengthened partnerships with our local farming communities, Kwantlen College, and the Vancouver Opera.
We have seen the completion of the seismic work on Delta Secondary, hosted Her Honour the Lieutenant Governor, and welcomed many education delegates from around the world to visit and learn with us.
Our Indigenous Education Department has worked to increase learning success with our students. New staff and education leaders helped to grow and evaluate how we are doing as a district in our commitment to innovative teaching.
And we survived a winter that seemed unending, gaining new skills in snow and ice removal!
It is a testament to our commitment to our mission “to enable all learners to succeed and contribute to their full potential to the future” that this month almost 1500 students earned their diplomas. Bravo!
The 2016/17 school year was also a year of change and development in many areas. The revised Provincial Curriculum and the Supreme Court ruling restoring class size and composition has been an ongoing focus for the District this year. Throughout the summer and into the fall District staff will continue to work with schools and the Ministry of Education to ensure that we continue to offer innovative and inclusive learning opportunities for all our students.
Thank you to our families, the Corporation of Delta, our community based partners, the Delta Teachers’ Association, CUPE 1091, excluded staff and many others who helped our schools and the district make so many gains.
Parents, guardians and families, thank you for working together with us to help students achieve their potential. Your ongoing support and collaboration with teachers, administrators and staff is invaluable to our community.
Thank you to staff for your professionalism and dedication to our students. Whether in a classroom or behind the scenes, your commitment to Our Bold Vision supports Delta as a leading district for innovative teaching and learner success.
You have earned a well-deserved break, and we hope you enjoy time this summer to relax and recharge for next year.
Sincerely,
Doug Sheppard
Superintendent, Delta School District
